Flag day - Panama City, Panama
Every November 4th, Panama City bursts into a vibrant sea of red, white, and blue to celebrate Flag Day. It is a tribute to the nation’s identity and the symbol that unites it all. As part of Panama’s Fiestas Patrias (Patriotic Holidays), Flag Day follows the country's Independence Day from Colombia on November 3rd, extending a week of celebration.
This isn’t just a day off for students and government workers—it’s a full display of national unity. Tons of schools and civic groups fill the streets with choreographed parades, school bands echo through the air, and flags ripple from balconies, buses, and storefronts.
We went to the large parade in Panama City, which marched through Casco Viejo. Local students lead the way in sharply pressed uniforms, many having practiced their routines for months. Bands perform traditional marches and patriotic songs, filling the air with rhythm and pride. Crowds gather on sidewalks to cheer, wave flags, and snap photos as the vibrant procession rolls by.
The flag itself tells a story. Its design symbolizes political balance, with blue for the Conservative party, red for the Liberals, and white for peace. The two stars represent purity and strength. November is still part of Panama’s rainy season, so come prepared with umbrellas or light jackets.
The parade lasts literally all day - so you can pick a time and see some fun. I think there were over 60 bands in the one we went to!
